I thought my partner didn't support me, until I realised the truth

I thought my partner didn't support me, until I realised the truth...

It was back in 2014, and I was at a crossroads in my life. I had been running a successful sports injury treatment business in person, but the gym where I worked had closed down, leaving me in a difficult situation. I knew I needed to transition my business to an online platform, but it was proving to be a challenge. I desperately wanted to create a better life for myself and my partner, Pete, one that didn't involve me being chained to the treatment table for eight hours a day.

Pete and I had many conversations about my business, but it became evident that he didn't fully understand what being in business online entailed. As a result, our discussions often led to arguments (which we never did), leaving me feeling more frustrated and alone. Eventually, we agreed not to talk about my work at all, as it was causing too much stress in our relationship. I felt isolated, unable to confide in the person I most wanted to share my struggles with.

As time passed, I found myself feeling increasingly like Pete didn't support me in my endeavours, which I knew deep down wasn't true at all. It wasn't until a few years later that I realised Pete was actually offering me immense support in other ways, particularly in shouldering the extra financial burden while I worked to transition my business. I had been so focused on wanting him to understand my struggles with the business that I had overlooked the ways in which he was supporting me.

It was a valuable lesson for me. I came to understand that different people in my life offered support in different ways, and that it was essential to recognise and appreciate the support that was being given, even if it didn't look the way I had expected. I also learned that I needed to be more selective about who I shared my problems with in order to receive the support I truly needed.

In the end, I discovered that support can come in many forms, and that being more choosy about who I shared which problems with was the best way to create a more harmonious life for me, Pete, and those around us. This realisation not only improved my relationship with Pete, but also helped me to foster stronger connections with the people who were best able to support me in my business endeavours.
