How To Whack Overwhelm To Bits In 2026!
I don’t know about you, but I’m a bit of a stationery junkie. I love notebooks, planners, and brightly colored pens. As the end of the year approaches, I’m excited by the prospect of filling my brand new planner with all my aspirations and covering them in color in the hope that this time, I’ll actually achieve some of them!
Take a goal I had more than 20 years ago, for example. I was two or three years into a four-year degree course at a University here in the UK when my friend and I made a pact that for our 30th birthdays, we would attend an NFL match in the States.
Her birthday is a couple of weeks before mine, so we felt it would be a fitting way to celebrate together.
Back then, the age of 30 felt like the distant future since it was almost ten years away. The thing is, though, without a plan of how we might achieve this goal, life simply turned our attention to other things, and as we’re hurtling towards our 50th birthdays, we still haven’t even been to an NFL match, let alone one in the States!
As solo business owners, it can be easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of tasks and responsibilities that the end of the year brings, leaving little room for meaningful goal-setting.
You’ve probably found yourself in a similar position as me, more than once. You know, dreaming up all kinds of inspiring plans but struggling to bring them to life, only to find yourself rewriting the same list of goals from last year.
Perhaps you’ve made resolutions that felt hopeful but ultimately got overshadowed by the day-to-day demands of running your business. Those experiences can lead us to believe we’re stuck in a cycle of overwhelm, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Every year brings us an opportunity to recalibrate, and here’s how you can whack overwhelm to bits in 2026.
Firstly, don’t plan alone! I know it sounds counterintuitive to say that setting your own personal goals for your unique business alongside other people is helpful, but it really is!
The weight of responsibility for your own business can feel overwhelming, so even just being around others who are in the same boat as you can be helpful… but when you can learn from them, pinch their ideas, and be inspired by them, it’s so much more powerful (dare I say, fun?) than doing it on your own.
Secondly, follow a proven strategy to help guide your planning. Everybody and his brother has heard how breaking your big goals down into manageable steps is a great idea, so why hasn’t it worked for so many of us before now?
This approach by itself is next to useless when every small step feels like a giant mountain to climb. Oh, but when you combine it with an incredible strategy, suddenly, what used to seem insurmountable feels daring, exciting, and most of all, achievable!
Lastly, accept your limitations. You are one human being. Ok, you’re a super capable, incredible human being, but even you can’t achieve ALL your goals in one year. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day!
Turning your goals into action steps and drawing them out on a year planner or calendar gives you a visual representation of your expectations. Having a realistic view of what is required to achieve your goals in your expected timeframe is a powerful tool. It helps to stop you from overloading your plate before the new year has even begun, so you don’t collapse in an exhausted heap come spring!
And, as an added bonus, once your plan is done, you can relax and enjoy the holiday season knowing exactly how to hit the ground running come January 1.
You deserve to step into the new year with clarity, direction, and peace of mind, so let me gift it to you!
