How to Overcome Impostor Syndrome

How Solo Business Owners Can Beat Imposter Syndrome, For Good!

February 05, 20264 min read

Imposter syndrome can hit anyone, from those just starting their entrepreneurial journey to established business owners raking in millions. It’s why we feel like we’re not good enough or that we’re not worthy of success. But, how can we tackle this pesky issue once and for all?

First, we need to recognize that words alone won’t do the trick. We’ve all experienced moments where we feel down about how we look or our abilities, and no amount of compliments from friends can lift that cloud. Maybe you’ve heard someone say, "Oh, you look great!" when you didn't feel it at all. The words feel empty when they don’t align with the unspoken conversation you’re having with yourself.

I remember when this happened to a fitness client of mine years ago. She was overly fixated on the appearance of her shoulders, spending countless hours trying to make them symmetrical. She was in incredible shape, but no matter how many people told her how great she looked, she still wasn’t happy because she was focused on the perceived problem with her shoulders. Sound familiar?

You see, imposter syndrome often stems from the stories we tell ourselves… the internal dialogue that feeds our insecurities. Have you ever caught yourself dismissing affirmations like, "I am a good leader" or "I am an excellent entrepreneur"? Often, we don’t believe it ourselves. This self-doubt can become a crippling cycle.

So, what can we do about it?

It’s essential that you get real about the stories you’ve been telling yourself and start challenging them. Ask yourself: what made me believe I’m not good enough? Understanding the roots of that belief is the first step towards changing it. Perhaps it comes from a critical remark in your past, a tough boss who called you a fraud, or an experience that made you question your talents.

Whatever the reason, a small step back can help us to rewrite that narrative. Imagine two friends holding a beach ball. The ball is green on one side and red on the other. One friend can only see the green side, while the other can only see the red. From where they are standing, it’s easy for them to believe that the ball they are holding is either entirely green or entirely red… but that’s not the whole story. Taking a step back and looking at your life from a different perspective often helps us to see ourselves in a different light.

The stories we tell ourselves are powerful… and they don’t even need to be true! They just need to feel believable. If you’re telling yourself you’re “not a salesperson," you might be letting fear dictate your actions. Instead, replace that narrative with something like, “I’m in the process of learning how to sell.” That small shift can open doors to growth and confidence.

Our relationship with money is also critical to this discussion. Many of us grew up with strict beliefs about finances, where money is a taboo subject, or it's better not to discuss salaries. Such baggage can seep into how we present our services or price our offerings.

The most common impact I’ve seen for solo business owners when it comes to their beliefs about money is that they think that other people won’t pay more, because they themselves wouldn’t pay it, can’t afford to pay it, or don’t believe that they are worthy of being paid that much, because they never have been before. This creates a self-imposed ceiling that limits your growth.

Overcoming imposter syndrome is an ongoing process… one that requires awareness, reframing, and sometimes, a little challenge to those ingrained beliefs. Each step you take to rewrite your story gets you closer to recognizing your worth and embracing your skills as a business owner.

So, the next time that inner critic pipes up, pause, reflect, and ask yourself: Is that story serving me? If not, let’s create a better one, together.
