All-in-One vs. Multi-Platform: The Digital Dimwit’s Guide to Business Tech.
We’ve all been there, subscribing to a shiny new digital tool thinking it will save us, only to realize we’ve built a digital "disaster" instead of a self-driving business. Heck, I’ve even fallen for a sales pitch that included the line “even if you do nothing with this software for the next 10 years, it’s still cheaper than building it yourself, from scratch.”
It’s not that any of us are stupid… far from it. It’s just that when we’re not clear about who we are in business and where we’re headed, we invest in things that we’ll probably never need, just in case we might at some point in the future.
And I don’t know about you, but my mind-reading and future-seeing skills aren’t yet good enough to be reliable!
Because we don’t know what we’ll need to know in business 10 years down the road, we focus on the here and now, learning each new piece of software as it comes, or stuffing it on a virtual shelf to collect digital dust in the hope that “one day” we’ll get around to using it.
The trouble is, we usually end up with a huge assortment of half-understood, sub-optimally operated software that’s confusing and unwieldy.
That is, of course, unless you bury your head in the sand and refuse to engage with tech at all! I once worked with a lady who did that. She described herself as a "digital dimwit." It was a label she used to hide behind so she could avoid using or learning new tech, but that mindset was the very thing holding her back.
These days, your tech stack is either the engine for your transformation or the anchor holding you back. In this blog post, we’re diving headfirst into the "Digital Disaster" of tech overcomplication and how to pivot from a 50-task to-do list to a few simple, yet Potent™ moves.
One of the first things we must clarify is what I call your "Golden Era." This isn't about the past; it’s the period of time where you are firing on all cylinders, making your biggest impact in the world, and reaping the benefits of your hard work.
However, poor tech choices act like thieves. When your software isn't fit for purpose, your to-do list bloats. You spend hours each week "faffing" on tasks, like moving your email list to a different provider and learning a new platform (again), that aren't revenue-generating; they’re just time-consuming. This inefficiency eats into your Golden Era and delays your goals, which might not seem like a big deal in the context of a few days, but when that small delay adds a few extra years to the age you’ll be able to retire, suddenly, it’s a HUGE deal!
One of the biggest mistakes I see many business owners making is trying to scale a great offer with messy tech. Scaling on a weak foundation is a recipe for a digital disaster. Before choosing your tools, you must be very clear about your business foundations. I like to call these your Foundation Rocks.
I talk more about these Foundation Rocks in chapter 5 of my international best-selling book “Stop Doing It All.” They are:
Yourself - your relevance, your credibility, and your confidence in your abilities
Your ideal customer - who truly values your expertise enough to want to pay you
Your Uniqueness - what is memorable and intriguing about how you get results
What you want to be known for - building a cohesive, manageable, and profitable business around your unique expertise
How to present yourself to the world - the narrative you want the world to remember about you, and where they can find it
Your measure of success - what success really looks like to you
Uncertainty about any of these Foundation Rocks is the source of most of the business problems I see founders struggling with.
When you can layer the things you know about your own personality with clarity about your purpose, direction, and ultimate goal in business, then you can make the most critical decision about your tech: Would an All-in-One platform or multiple platforms work best for you?
Personally, I know that juggling 5 different platforms with overlapping capabilities and fragmented communication would cause me far too much stress… yes, I learned that the hard way 🤣. That’s why, for me, an all-in-one platform works best. I also like how the AI integration can draw on centralized information to provide me with better guidance.
I didn’t start that way, though. Like many solo entrepreneurs, I started with the free entry-level tiers with different software companies. I had a free email provider, a free funnel builder, and a free automation tool. Soon, I had five different subscriptions that didn't communicate. That’s when I began wasting time trying to track a customer's journey across each different software.
I didn’t enjoy the constant shifting of updates or having to figure out why data wasn’t being sent from one bit of tech to the next just to sell my services. It felt like I was building my business on sand.
When I finally got clear about what I wanted from my business, and chose the tech to match (instead of trying to fit my burgeoning business around multiple pricing tiers), everything felt a lot steadier and more intentional. Like I’d chosen the specific rock I wanted to build my business on. That’s when I started making much more progress, much faster.
